Mattresses UK | Pocket Sprung, Memory Foam and Orthopaedic Firm, Delivered Nationwide

Buying a mattress in the UK is harder than it should be, mostly because everyone quotes spring counts and nobody explains what they mean. There are ten mattresses in our range, from the £129 Harmony at the affordable end to the Platinum 3000 pocket, and every one is cut to standard UK sizes so it sits flush on the base with no gap at the edges. Whatever you’re sleeping on now, what follows should help you work out which is the best mattress for how you actually sleep.

JMH Beds is a family business. We’d rather talk you into the right mattress than the dearest one, and we say so on the phone most days.

The Mattress Range at a Glance

Pocket Sprung Mattresses

In a pocket sprung mattress each spring sits in its own fabric pocket and compresses independently, so weight is supported where it lands rather than across the whole surface. That makes it the sensible choice for couples — when one of you turns over, the other barely notices.

Our pocket range runs from the Diamond 2000 Pocket through to the Platinum 3000 Pocket, the higher count giving finer, more responsive support.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam moulds to your shape and holds it, which suits anyone who wants a mattress that cradles rather than pushes back. The Topaz Memory is our best-value option and the Universal Full Memory Foam offers a deeper foam construction throughout.

One honest caveat: foam sleeps warmer than springs. If you run hot, the next two options will suit you better.

Memory Pocket and Cooling Gel

Springs underneath for support and airflow, foam on top for comfort. The Ruby 1000 Memory Pocket is our most popular all-rounder, and the 1000 Pocket Memory Cooling Gel adds a gel layer that helps disperse heat.

Pillow Top Mattresses

An extra padded layer stitched onto the surface gives a softer, more hotel-like feel without losing the support underneath. The Canterbury 2000 and Canterbury 3000 are the two to compare, the 3000 being the more substantial.

Orthopaedic Firm Support

The Orthopaedic Firm Mattress has a noticeably firmer feel, which many people simply prefer — particularly front sleepers and anyone who finds a soft mattress leaves them sinking. It’s also the one to pick for a guest room, since a firm mattress suits the widest range of visitors.

A word of caution on the term itself. In the mattress trade “orthopaedic” describes a firm feel, not a medical specification, so any search for the best orthopaedic mattress in the UK will turn up firm mattresses rather than certified medical products. If you’re dealing with a specific back problem, speak to your GP or physiotherapist about what’ll help before you spend anything.

Everyday Value

The Harmony Mattress is our entry-level option, and the one we recommend for spare rooms, student houses, holiday lets and anywhere a mattress gets occasional use. If you’ve been searching for cheap mattresses in the UK and wondering what you’ll actually get, this is a straightforward, honestly-built mattress rather than something padded out to hit a price.

How to Choose the Right Firmness

Forget the marketing. Firmness comes down to how you sleep and what you weigh.

Side sleepers generally want medium to medium-soft. Your shoulder and hip need to sink in a little, or your spine ends up bent all night.

Back sleepers are usually best on medium to medium-firm — enough give for the lower back, enough support to stop you sagging.

Front sleepers want firm. A soft mattress lets the hips drop, which arches the lower back and is the most common reason people wake up stiff.

Heavier sleepers need firmer support than lighter ones, whatever their position. The same mattress genuinely feels different under different weights.

Couples who disagree should look at pocket sprung. Independent springs cope with two different body weights far better than a single sprung unit, and there’s much less rolling towards the middle.

What Pocket Counts Actually Mean

Since every mattress in Britain is sold on a number, here’s the honest version.

More springs means smaller springs, packed more densely, which gives finer support that follows your body more closely. A 3000 pocket is more responsive than a 1000 pocket. That much is true.

What’s less often mentioned: pocket counts are usually quoted for a king size, so the same model in a single contains fewer springs. And beyond a certain point the difference is marginal compared with getting the firmness right. A well-chosen 1000 pocket will beat a 3000 that’s too firm for you, every night of the week.

Buy on feel and support first. Treat the number as a tie-breaker.

When to Replace Your Mattress

Most mattresses are past their best around seven or eight years in. The signs:

  • You wake up stiff or achy but feel fine once you’re moving about
  • There’s a visible dip where you sleep, or a ridge down the middle
  • You sleep better in hotels — a genuinely reliable indicator
  • You can feel the springs, or hear them
  • Your allergies are worse overnight rather than seasonally
  • It’s older than your youngest child and they’re at school

If the mattress is fine but the base beneath it has gone, a new mattress alone won’t fix it. They wear as a pair, which is why we sell both — have a look at our beds online if yours is the same age.

Matching the Mattress to Your Bed Base

This is where people go wrong, so it’s worth a moment.

Memory foam and hybrids do best on a ventilated base. Foam is dense and doesn’t breathe well from above, so it relies on airflow from underneath to move moisture away. Our slatted ottoman beds are built for exactly that.

Pocket sprung and pillow top mattresses sit happily on either a slatted or a solid base, so divan beds with drawers and ottoman beds with storage both work well.

TV beds take the same standard sizes as the rest of the range, so any mattress here will fit our TV beds without adjustment.

Children’s rooms want a new mattress rather than a hand-me-down, plus a waterproof protector for the younger years. Our kids’ beds with storage take standard UK sizes too.

Rotate your mattress head to foot every few months in the first year, and check the care label before flipping — many pillow top and foam mattresses are single-sided.

Mattress Sizes

Small single 2ft 6in, single 3ft, small double 4ft, double 4ft 6in, king 5ft and super king 6ft. All standard UK dimensions, so they fit British bed frames and ordinary UK bedding without the sizing headaches that come with imported mattresses.

Replacing a mattress on an existing bed? Measure the base rather than the old mattress — mattresses compress and shrink slightly with age.

Have a proper look through all ten, filter by size and price, and work backwards from how you sleep rather than from the spring count. If you’re ordering a bed at the same time, buying both together means the mattress arrives cut to fit the base exactly and everything turns up on one delivery.

When you’re ready to buy a mattress online in the UK, it’s a couple of minutes at checkout with delivery to your door anywhere in the country. If you’re torn between two — and most people are — get in touch. Ring +44 7534 269866 or email info@jmhbeds.co.uk, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Tell us how you sleep, roughly what you weigh and what’s wrong with your current mattress, and we’ll point you at the right one. Sometimes that’s the £129 Harmony, and we’ll say so.

Sorting the whole house? Our corner sofas and ottoman storage boxes can come on the same delivery.

Mattress FAQs

Which is the best mattress for me?

The best mattress depends on how you sleep rather than on price. Side sleepers generally suit medium to medium-soft, back sleepers medium to medium-firm, and front sleepers firm. Couples usually do best on a pocket sprung mattress, since independent springs handle two different body weights with far less disturbance.

What is a pocket sprung mattress?

A pocket sprung mattress houses each spring in its own fabric pocket, so it compresses independently of the ones around it. Support is applied where your body actually presses down, and movement from one side of the bed transfers much less to the other — which is why they suit couples.

Does a higher pocket count mean a better mattress?

Not necessarily. A higher count means smaller, more densely packed springs and finer support, but firmness matters more. A 1000 pocket mattress at the right firmness will outperform a 3000 that’s too firm for how you sleep. Pocket counts are also usually quoted for a king size, so smaller sizes contain fewer springs.

How often should I replace my mattress?

Most mattresses need replacing around seven to eight years in. The clearest signs are waking up stiff, a visible dip or ridge in the surface, being able to feel or hear the springs, or consistently sleeping better away from home.

Is a firm or orthopaedic mattress better for back pain?

In the mattress trade, “orthopaedic” describes a firm feel rather than a medical specification. Many people who prefer firm support find it comfortable, but if you’re dealing with a specific back condition, speak to your GP or physiotherapist before buying rather than relying on a product description.

Does memory foam sleep hot?

Memory foam retains more heat than springs, because the foam is dense and sits close against the body. If you sleep warm but want the memory foam feel, a memory pocket or cooling gel mattress gives you the comfort layer with springs and airflow underneath.

What bed base should a memory foam mattress go on?

Memory foam does best on a ventilated base such as a slatted ottoman bed, which lets moisture move away from the underside of the mattress. A solid base traps humidity against the foam, which shortens its life and can lead to damp underneath.

What size mattress do I need?

UK mattress sizes run from small single 2ft 6in through single 3ft, small double 4ft, double 4ft 6in and king 5ft to super king 6ft. Measure your bed base rather than your old mattress, since mattresses compress slightly with age.

Should I turn or rotate my mattress?

Rotate it head to foot every few months, particularly in the first year. Check the care label before flipping — many pillow top and memory foam mattresses are single-sided and should only be rotated, not turned over.

Can I buy a mattress and bed together?

Yes, and it’s the simpler route. Ordering both together means the mattress is cut to fit the base exactly, with no gap at the edges, and everything arrives on the same delivery.

Do you deliver mattresses across the UK?

We deliver nationwide, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands, wrapped and protected in transit. Lead times vary by model and size, and we confirm your timeframe when you order.

Can I pay monthly for a mattress?

Yes. Spread the cost with 0% interest finance, or use Klarna, Clearpay or Snap Finance at checkout. Every mattress also carries a 1-year warranty against manufacturing faults.
