Our kids’ beds are made the same way as the beds we build for grown-ups: proper timber frames, hand-applied upholstery and drawers that still run smoothly after years of being yanked open by someone in a hurry. That matters more in a child’s room than anywhere else in the house, because a children’s bed gets treated as a trampoline, a den, a reading nook and occasionally a launch pad. Ours are built in our UK workshop to survive all of it.
There are six designs in the collection, from the soft-shaped Vienna to the padded Toddler beds with their built-in safety rails. JMH Beds is family-run, so when you ring with a question about rail height or which fabric copes best with felt-tip pen, you’ll get an answer from someone who’s fielded it before.
The Toddler Kids Bed and the Toddler Princess Kids Bed are built for the stage just after the cot. Both have padded sides that run along the bed, so there’s a soft barrier between your child and the floor, and the whole frame is upholstered rather than framed in timber. The Princess version adds a taller, softly shaped headboard; it’s the one that tends to win the argument at bedtime.
The Lilly Kids Bed is our most popular children’s bed. A neat panelled headboard, clean lines, and a shape that works just as well for a seven-year-old as it does for a teenager. The Lilly Kids Ottoman Bed is the same design with a full lift-up storage base underneath.
The Vienna Kids Bed is the simplest and most affordable in the range, with a low, softly curved headboard that suits a smaller room. There’s a Vienna Ottoman version too, if storage is the priority.
Children accumulate things at a rate that defies physics. Storage in the bed base is the most efficient answer, because it uses space that already exists.
Our kids’ beds with drawers have two drawers running on smooth runners, with solid bases rather than flimsy card bottoms. They’re the better choice if your child needs to get at things themselves — pyjamas, socks, the Lego they were told to put away. A five-year-old can open a drawer. A five-year-old shouldn’t be lifting a bed base.
Our kids’ beds with ottoman storage lift on gas struts to reveal one large compartment. It’s the right choice for bulky things you handle rather than they do: outgrown clothes waiting to be passed down, spare bedding, the enormous soft toy from the fairground.
If it’s a shared or small room, our storage boxes sit neatly at the foot of the bed and take the overflow.
Our beds with safety rails have padded sides built into the frame rather than a metal guard clamped on afterwards. There’s nothing to work loose, nothing to trap fingers, and nothing your child can dismantle at six in the morning.
A word of honest guidance: bed guards and rails are generally not recommended for children under 18 months, who are usually safer staying in a cot. From around 18 months to five or six, a rail gives a good deal of reassurance while your child gets used to sleeping without sides. After that, most children don’t need one.
Whichever bed you choose, keep it clear of curtain cords and radiators, and make sure the mattress sits flush against the frame so there’s no gap along the edge.
A single 3ft is the standard choice and the one we’d recommend for most children over about four. It fits a typical box room, leaves floor space for playing, and importantly — your child won’t outgrow it. A single bed bought at five is still perfectly usable at fifteen. Small single 2ft 6in is worth considering if the room is genuinely tight or you’re fitting two beds in.
A small double 4ft or double 4ft 6in works well for older children and teenagers, and it earns its keep when friends stay over. If you’ve got the floor space, a double now saves buying again in five years’ time. Measure first — allow at least 60cm of clear floor beside the bed, and more if you’re going for drawers.

Plush velvet, crushed velvet, chenille and a linen-look weave, in colours from soft greys and blush pinks through to navy and charcoal.
Our honest advice: the linen-look weave and the chenille hide marks best and take a damp cloth well. Crushed velvet looks lovely in photographs and shows every hand print. Grey and navy are far more forgiving than cream if the bed is going to a child under seven. We’re happy to talk this through before you commit — it’s a five-minute conversation that saves a lot of scrubbing.
Every bed in this collection is built and upholstered in our own UK workshop. The frames are kiln-dried timber, which holds its shape rather than twisting, and all our upholstered furniture is made to comply with UK fire safety regulations for domestic furniture — a legal requirement here, and one of the reasons we’d steer you away from very cheap imported beds sold through overseas marketplaces.
Because we manufacture rather than resell, we can also put things right quickly. A replacement drawer runner or a spare panel takes days, not months.
Children sweat considerably more into a mattress than adults do, so ventilation and hygiene matter. Our mattress range is cut to fit these bases exactly, and we’d generally point parents towards a medium-firm mattress with a washable cover.
Always use a new mattress for a child rather than passing down an old one, and add a waterproof protector for the younger years. You’ll thank yourself at 3am.

A single 3ft suits most children from about four upwards and will see them into their teens. Go for a small double or double if the room allows and you’d rather not buy again later.
