The ottoman bed slats are the whole point of this range. Instead of a solid board under your mattress, you get a run of timber slats with gaps between them, so air moves up through the base rather than getting trapped. Your mattress stays drier, it lasts longer, and you get the same full-length lift-up storage underneath. There are 38 designs in the collection, all built in our UK workshop, in sizes from small single 2ft 6in to super king 6ft.
JMH Beds is a family business, and we make these bases ourselves. That matters more on a slatted bed than most people realise, because the spacing and strength of the slats is exactly the sort of detail that gets skimped on when a bed is built to hit a price.
A solid ottoman base stores just as much. The difference is what happens to the underside of your mattress overnight:
Foam is dense and it doesn’t breathe well from above, so it relies on the base to shift moisture. Put a memory foam or hybrid mattress on a sealed board and you’re asking it to sit in its own humidity for years. A slatted ottoman bed base solves that without you having to think about it again.
It’s also worth checking your mattress guarantee. Some foam manufacturers specify a ventilated base, and will query a warranty claim if the mattress has been sitting on a solid platform. Our mattress range is matched to these bases, so there’s no guesswork if you buy the pair together.
Plenty of British homes have a bedroom that runs cold — a north-facing room, a ground-floor flat, an extension over a garage. Those are the rooms where people find dark patches on the underside of a mattress after a couple of winters. A breathable storage bed won’t fix a damp wall, but it stops the bed itself from becoming part of the problem.
If you’re the sort who kicks the duvet off at two in the morning, airflow underneath makes a real difference. It’s the least glamorous upgrade in the bedroom and one of the ones customers mention most when they ring back.
Thirty-eight models, covering everything from restrained to properly grand:
Plush velvet, crushed velvet, chenille and a linen-look weave. Colours run from oyster, silver and dove grey through to steel, navy, charcoal and black. Crushed velvet gives a room a bit of shine; the linen weave is the practical choice if children and pets treat the bed as communal property.
Small single 2ft 6in, single 3ft, small double 4ft, double 4ft 6in, king 5ft and super king 6ft — all cut to standard UK mattress sizes, so a British-made mattress will sit flush at the edges.
Most bases are built to lift from the side. If your bed sits in an alcove or hard against a wall, ring us before ordering and we’ll advise on the layout rather than let you guess.
Both give you identical storage volume and the same lifting mechanism. The choice comes down to the mattress and the room.
Choose slatted if you’re on memory foam or a hybrid, the room runs cold or damp, or you sleep warm.
Choose a solid-top ottoman if you’re storing lots of small, loose items and you’d rather they sat on a flat surface than across slats.
Choose a divan with drawers if your ceiling is too low for a lifting base, or you need daily access to what’s stored.
Many of our designs come in all three versions, so you can compare the Allure ottoman against the Allure slatted without changing the look of the bed at all.
Every base in this collection is built and upholstered in our own UK workshop. On a slatted lifting bed, that shows up in three places.
The frames are kiln-dried timber, which holds its shape instead of twisting — and a twisted frame is what makes a lifting base bind or sit crooked. The slats are set at a spacing that supports foam and sprung mattresses properly rather than letting them sag between the gaps. And we match strut strength to the size of the bed, so a super king isn’t running the same hardware as a single.
Because we manufacture rather than import, a replacement slat or strut is a phone call and a few days, not a twelve-week wait on a container from overseas. That’s the part customers appreciate three years in, not on day one.
A double gives you roughly a cubic metre of space — two large suitcases, spare bedding and a stack of seasonal clothing, all out of sight. Bulky, soft items sit perfectly happily across slats. If you’re storing smaller loose things, a shallow box or two keeps everything tidy, and our storage boxes are sized to slide in neatly.
One practical note: allow around 1.2 metres of clearance above the mattress so the base opens fully. Low ceilings and sloped attic walls are the two things that catch people out.

Still weighing up whether you need ottoman bed slats or a solid base? Get in touch, ring +44 7534 269866 or email info@jmhbeds.co.uk, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Tell us what mattress you’ve got and what the room’s like, and we’ll give you a straight answer, even when it points you at the cheaper bed.
Storage capacity and the lifting mechanism are identical. The slatted version has timber slats with gaps between them instead of a solid board, so air moves through and your mattress stays drier.
It’s strongly advisable. Foam relies on the base for ventilation, and some manufacturers specify a breathable base in their warranty terms.
No. The spacing is set to support both foam and sprung mattresses across their full length.
Yes, the compartment is the same size. Soft and bulky items sit fine across slats; use a box for smaller loose things.
Around 1.2 metres above the mattress for a side-lifting base to open fully. Ring us if you’re close to that.
No. The gas struts carry the weight of the base and mattress, so it opens with one hand and stays open while you load it.
Get in touch before ordering and we’ll talk through side-lift and end-lift for your room layout.
Yes, built, slatted and upholstered in our own workshop, not imported and relabelled.
Small single 2ft 6in through to super king 6ft, all to standard UK mattress dimensions.
Ring us. We made the bed, so spares are straightforward rather than a hunt through a supply chain.
