Why Drawers Work Better in a Child’s Room

There’s a reason we point most parents towards drawers rather than a lift-up base:

• Your child can use them. A six-year-old can open a drawer and put their own pyjamas away. They can’t safely lift a bed base.
• No ceiling clearance needed. Drawers pull out sideways, so low ceilings, sloped attic walls and bunk-height rooms are all fine.
• Everyday access. Socks, school uniform, the Lego they were told to tidy — things they reach for daily belong in a drawer, not under a mattress.
• It encourages tidying. Not a miracle cure, but a drawer at their height gets used. A heavy base doesn’t.
• Nothing to lift or lower. No gas struts, no mechanism, nothing that can come down unexpectedly.
• Compartmentalised. Two separate drawers beat one big space when you’re trying to keep clothes apart from toys.

Lilly

The Lilly Kids Bed is our most popular children’s bed and the one we’d suggest first. A neat panelled headboard, fully upholstered frame, and two smooth-running drawers in the base. The shape is grown-up enough that it still looks right when your seven-year-old turns fourteen — which is the whole point of buying properly the first time.

Vienna

The Vienna Kids Bed is the simpler, more affordable option. A low, softly curved headboard that suits a smaller room and doesn’t dominate it, with the same drawer storage underneath. It’s our best seller for box rooms and shared bedrooms.

Both are available in plush velvet, crushed velvet, chenille and a linen-look weave, in colours from soft greys and blush through to navy and charcoal.

How the Drawers Are Built

This is where cheap children’s beds cut corners, so it’s worth being specific.

Our drawers run on smooth runners and have solid bases, not thin card that bows under a stack of jumpers and eventually gives way. The frames are kiln-dried timber, which holds its shape rather than twisting — and a twisted frame is exactly what makes a drawer start sticking after eighteen months.

Because we manufacture rather than import, a replacement runner is a phone call and a few days. That’s a small thing until the day you need it.

Room Layout: Measure Before You Order

One practical point that catches people out. Drawers need clear floor space to open, so allow around 60cm on whichever side they pull out from.

If your child’s bed sits against a wall on one side — very common in a box room — tell us which side you need the drawers on and we’ll build it that way. It’s the sort of thing a workshop can do and a warehouse can’t.

If the room genuinely won’t take a drawer opening, our kids’ beds with ottoman storage lift upwards instead and need no floor clearance at all — just headroom.

What Actually Fits in the Drawers

Parents ask this constantly, so here’s the honest answer. Two drawers under a single bed hold roughly what a small chest of drawers would:

• School uniform and everyday clothes
• Pyjamas, socks and underwear
• Books, puzzles and board games
• Boxed toys and craft supplies

Bulky items — spare duvets, outgrown clothes waiting to be passed down, the giant fairground teddy — are better suited to a lift-up base or one of our storage boxes at the foot of the bed.

When a Children’s Bed with Storage Makes Sense

• The room’s too small for a chest of drawers. The most common reason parents come to us. Storage in the base is space you already own.
• Two children are sharing. Twice the belongings, same floor area. Drawer beds are the only sensible way to do it.
• They’ve outgrown the toddler bed. Usually around four or five. A single with drawers replaces both the bed and the toy box.
• The floor has disappeared. If you can’t cross the room without treading on something, the problem is storage, not tidiness.
• You’re moving house. New room, fresh start, and a chance to get it right before everything gets unpacked.

Small single 2ft 6in and single 3ft cover most children’s rooms, with larger sizes available if you’ve got the space and want the bed to last into adulthood. All sizes are cut to standard UK mattress dimensions, so any British-made mattress will fit properly. Our mattress range is matched to these bases if you’d rather buy the pair together.

Made in the UK

Every bed here is built and upholstered in our own UK workshop, and all our upholstered furniture is made to comply with UK fire safety regulations for domestic furniture. That’s a legal requirement in this country, and one good reason to be wary of very cheap children’s beds sold through overseas marketplaces.
