Moving a child out of a cot is one of those milestones that sounds simple until the first night arrives. Why a Built-In Rail Beats a Clip-On Bed Guard

Most children’s bed guards are separate metal or mesh frames that clamp onto an ordinary bed. Ours aren’t. The padded sides are part of the bed frame itself, upholstered in the same fabric as the rest, and that changes a few things:

• Nothing to work loose. No brackets, screws or straps to check every fortnight and retighten.
• No gap to worry about. The sides are built flush to the frame rather than clamped over a mattress edge.
• Nothing hard to bump into. A padded side is far kinder at three in the morning than a metal bar.
• Your child can’t dismantle it. Which they will absolutely try to do.
• It looks like a bed, not a hospital cot. Small thing, but it matters to a child who’s proud of their new big bed.
• The storage still works. The base lifts as normal.

The Two Designs

Toddler Kids Bed

The Toddler Kids Bed is the straightforward one — a low, fully upholstered frame with padded sides and a neat headboard. It sits close to the floor, so the drop is short if your child does end up on the wrong side of the rail.

Toddler Princess Kids Bed

The Toddler Princess Kids Bed is the same build with a taller, softly shaped headboard. It’s the one that tends to settle the argument at bedtime, and in our experience a child who’s excited about their bed goes into it more willingly.

Both come in plush velvet, crushed velvet, chenille and a linen-look weave, in colours from blush and soft grey through to navy. Our honest steer for this age group: the linen weave and chenille take a damp cloth best, and darker shades forgive a great deal.

When Is Your Child Ready to Leave the Cot?

There’s no fixed age, but these are the usual signals:

• They’re climbing out. Once that starts, the cot has become the more dangerous option. This is the clearest sign of all.
• They’re too long for it. Feet at the end, or barely room to turn over.
• They’re asking. Plenty of children decide for themselves, particularly if an older sibling has a proper bed.
• A new baby’s coming. Move them well before the cot is needed, not the same week — a month or two ahead avoids the sense of being displaced.
• Potty training’s started. Getting out at night is much easier from a low bed.

Most families make the move somewhere between 18 months and three years. There’s no prize for doing it early.

Safety Advice We’d Give Any Parent

We’d rather be useful here than sell you something, so here’s the guidance that matters most.

Under 18 months, stay with the cot. Bed guards and rails generally aren’t recommended for children under 18 months, who are usually safer in a cot with proper sides.

Make sure the mattress fits snugly. There should be no gap between the mattress and the frame or the padded sides. Always use a mattress cut to the correct size for the bed rather than a spare that’s roughly right.

Check the surroundings before the first night. Move the bed away from windows, radiators and any blind or curtain cords. Secure chests of drawers and bookcases to the wall — a child who’s just learned they can get out of bed will climb things.

Keep the drop short. These beds sit low deliberately. Put a rug or a folded duvet beside the bed for the first few weeks if it helps you sleep.

Don’t use a separate clip-on guard on a bunk. Bed guards aren’t designed for upper bunks, whatever the packaging says.

Rails aren’t forever. Most children stop needing one somewhere around four or five, once rolling out has stopped being a risk.

The First Few Nights

Expect a wobble. Almost every child gets out of bed at least once in the first week, simply because they now can.

Keep the routine identical to the one they had in the cot — same order, same story, same lights. Walk them back calmly and without much conversation if they appear at the door. Most families find it settles within a fortnight.

Storage Built In

Both designs have a lift-up ottoman base, which is well timed: the move out of the cot usually coincides with a room full of things that no longer fit anywhere. Sleeping bags, outgrown babygros, the cot bedding you’re keeping just in case.

You’ll want around 1.2 metres of clearance above the mattress for the base to open fully.

Sizes and Mattresses

Small single 2ft 6in and single 3ft cover most children’s rooms, cut to standard UK mattress dimensions. A single 3ft is worth considering even for a small child — they’ll grow into it, and you won’t be buying again in three years.

Use a new mattress rather than a hand-me-down, and add a waterproof protector for the potty-training years. Our mattress range is matched to these bases exactly, which removes any question of gaps at the edges.

Both beds are built and upholstered in our own UK workshop, using kiln-dried timber frames that hold their shape rather than twisting. All our upholstered furniture is made to comply with UK fire safety regulations for domestic furniture — a legal requirement here, and one of the better reasons to be cautious about very cheap children’s beds sold through overseas marketplaces.
